An online community to help you build a side business that fits your life, your values, and your calling.

The best thing you can do for your ministry is start a side business.

Not because of the extra money, though that matters. Not because of the creative outlet, though that matters too. Because of what it does to you.

When you have something that's entirely yours, it becomes a place of meaning and purpose outside your main call. It gives you a sense that you are capable of creating things in the world. It changes you as a person. And then that changed person goes back into their ministry.

You develop a sense of agency. When you've built something from nothing, you carry yourself differently. You stop waiting for the institution to affirm you because you have your own evidence that what you offer is worth something.

You understand the business of the church differently. Marketing a side business teaches you how to get someone's attention, invite someone into something transformative, and ask someone to invest in something they believe in. Those skills translate directly into evangelism, stewardship, and vision casting.

You have somewhere else to be someone. When your entire identity lives in one place, one title, one community, you are one difficult season away from losing yourself. A side business gives you an identity that no congregational vote can take away.

You gain real freedom. Freedom to stay in difficult calls longer. Freedom to serve communities of higher need without worrying about the salary. Freedom to leave a toxic situation with a small financial bridge between that call and the next one.

Research confirms it: adding a creative project is one of the most effective protections against burnout.

The side business doesn't distract from your ministry. For a lot of the leaders I work with, it turns out to be the thing that saves it.

You love ministry, but you're ready to create a different impact.

Discern by Doing for Business helps you launch or grow a side hustle alongside ministry. We tackle business infrastructure like tech and payment systems, marketing, communications, and sales. We also unpack destructive messages that tell you to play small, not charge much, "stay in your lane," or worry about what people will think.

Our goal is a viable business that can be a true source of additional income for you. We'll get you to a point where you can charge real money but it's never about the money. It's about freedom, agency, a creative outlet that's all yours, and a different impact on the world.

A supportive environment to grow your business that won't leave you exhausted.

Learning Videos

The backbone of the eCourse is a curriculum made up of weekly 5-7 minute videos and asynchronous online discussion. Most videos feel like a TED talk. The topics have been created specifically for women in ministry. Comment any time the day the video goes live.

Small group coaching

We meet in groups of 4-6 for 60 minutes on Zoom nearly every week. Yep, every week. We've found that businesses grow faster with shorter, more frequent check-ins to celebrate, challenge one another (gently, of course), and think expansively about the work of the Holy Spirit in our entrepreneurial journeys. We end every meeting by setting action goals, so you'll never wonder what to do between sessions.

WINS-day

We hold one another joyfully accountable through WINS-days, a midweek online check-in where we post proof of our progress. (Pics or it didn't happen ... )

Here's exactly what we'll be talking about and when. (Exact meeting time determined by the needs of the group.)

Your business could be thriving by Easter.

Most people are surprised at how much they can build in only six months, simply by being held accountable to relatively small action steps on a regular basis. Unlike a book, podcast, lecture, or even weekend retreat where you learn information and are left to implement on your own, we constantly revisit goals, discuss together how to improve your business, and cheer you on through the hard parts.

Some people launch coaching practices, others create retreat businesses or consulting services, and some develop subscription boxes or digital products. What will you create?

A clear, proven path to entrepreneurial confidence, sustainable income, and creative alignment with your calling.

01

Your business mindset

How do you cultivate a growth mindset as an entrepreneur? Is it okay to make money doing something you love and feel called to? How do you handle guilt about charging for services? Which of your skills translate into marketable services or products?

02

The Nuts and Bolts of Business

How do you market authentically? What does sales look like when it doesn't feel salesy? How do you price your offerings? What platforms and tools will support your growth without overwhelming you?

03

The 90-day goal

What is your vision for your business in the next 3-5 years? What goal could you set for the next 90 days? What habits and tasks will help you get there?

04

Fear and Other Roadblocks

What if nobody buys? What if your church doesn't fully support this? How do you balance building a business with your current responsibilities? What if you fail publicly? Hint: we won't let that happen.

05

Celebration and Reflection

What tangible results do you have to show for your work? What might be your next 90-day goal? Where did you hear the still small voice of God speaking through your entrepreneurial journey?

Ready to create income streams that give you choices?

It's more fun (and more effective) to create it in a group.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this only for female pastors?

Absolutely not! We welcome ministry-adjacent women from all contexts—pastors, church staff, non-profit leaders, volunteers in mainline denominations, and anyone whose work orbits around faith communities. You'll fit in best if you're at least active enough to effortlessly know things like when Lent is and what the letters VBS stand for. (If you had to Google either of those, this might not be your group.)

What's the time commitment?

The nearly weekly Zooms are 60 minutes, usually on a Monday or Thursday afternoon. We choose the time based on everyone's availability and even move the session if everyone can't make one. The weekly videos are just 5-10 minutes, but challenge you to take action on your business, which can take as much or as little time as you'd like. (Translation: you control the pace.)

Does this program provide legal or financial advice?

No. This program focuses on the creative, strategic, and practical aspects of building your business—not legal or tax guidance. You'll want to consult with an accountant or attorney for questions about business structure, taxes, and legal requirements. (We're good, but we're not CPAs.)

How do I know if I'm ready?

Whether you're just getting started or have been nurturing this business for awhile, this group is for people making their first $100,000 with their side hustle. Just be ready to increase your pace of growth, whatever it is. If you are so deeply depleted that it's hard to imagine giving any energy to building something new, this type of group coaching is not for you (yet.)
